The Intersection of History, Adoption, and Mental Health - Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

The Intersection of History, Adoption, and Mental Health

by Astrid Castro, Founder & CEO of Adoption Mosaic

Encompass Adoptees Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

Presentation Description:

At one point or another in our lives as adoptees, we will explore what we had to lose to be adopted. During this time of exploration many adoptees will also learn the dark side of adoption history and most likely will be at a loss of how to exist in the both/and. "I love who I am AND I don't love what I had to go through to get here".  When talking about adoption it is common to leave out the history of how adoption began in the United States. In this course, we will dive into the importance of understanding the history of adoption and its impact not only on our society, but also on our adoptee community. We will use the Adoptee Consciousness Model to explore the intersection of the history of adoption, adoptees, and our well being.

Presenter Bio:

Astrid  Castro (she/her/hers) is the founder and CEO of  Adoption  Mosaic. Adoption Mosaic is a BIPOC adoptee, woman-led business that seeks to build an inviting adoption conscious community by providing innovative adoptee-centered programs and support.Including a monthly virtual panel series called We the Experts: Adoptee Speaker Series. Astrid has a degree in sociology with an emphasis in adoption. For twenty plus years, she has traveled the country to lead youth groups, present workshops on transracial parenting, talking with children about adoption, and various other workshops focusing on adoption. Prior to creating Adoption Mosaic, Astrid worked in both the private and public sectors of various adoption organizations such as the Oregon Post Adoption Resource Center (ORPARC), Holt International and Rocky Mountain Adoption Exchange.

Astrid co-authored Adoption in the Movies, which takes the reader on a guided tour of 27 movies and documentaries that are ‘dripping with adoption’ which are asking questions that encourage viewers to engage in ongoing dialogue and discussion. She also developed an innovative, evidence-based, 27-minute training DVD titled, Adoptive Parent Training:Developing Communication Skills. The training demonstrates how adoptive parents can communicate openly and honestly with family, friends and especially children. Astrid is a former member of the board of directors of the North American Council on Adoptable Children, the author of many articles on the subject of adoption, and contributor to the book Parenting as Adoptees.

Astrid’s personal experiences as an adoptee, a woman of color, and growing up in a white family and community, fuel her professional path to helping others. Astrid is aware of the benefit of post-adoption services for individuals and their families and seeks to bring these services to the adoption community. Her life-long interest in adoption is rooted in her own adoption at the age of four from Colombia (along with her older sister). Astrid has been in reunion with her birth family in Colombia since December 2011. Read about Astrid’s journey of searching and finding her birth mother in The Oregonian

When Astrid is not working she loves to spend time with family, friends, and  enjoying the adventures of life as the mama of an amazing daughter.

Suicidality and Prevention with Adoptees & Unique Populations - Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

Suicidality and Prevention with Unique Populations

by Dr. Melanie Chung-Sherman, DSW, LCSW-S, PLLC, Adult Adoptee Therapist

Encompass Adoptees Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

Presentation Description:

According to the Centers for Disease Control the U.S. suicide rate increased by 2.6% from 2021-2022 with the highest rates of suicides by females ages 10-14 years old and males 45-64 years old ([CDC], 2016). It is one of the ten leading causes of death (CDC, 2023) within the general population, but when these statistics are deconstructed there are factors to consider such as race, gender expression, sexual identity, immigrant status, mental health, and more related to the needs of unique populations.  LGBTQIA+ youth, particularly transgender youth, are at an increased risk of suicide attempts as well as death by nearly 50% of the general population (Haas, et al.  2011). In October 2013, the University of Minnesota’s Department of Psychology released their longitudinal findings about suicide behavior, adoption status, and non-adoption status among siblings, which revealed that adopted youth were four times more likely to attempt suicide than their non-adopted peers (Keys, et al., 2013).  Within communities of color, particularly African-American, veteran, and immigrant communities, there is a heightened risk of suicide attempts and completion (Crosy & Molock, 2006; Chung, et al., 2015).

While minority-status alone does not cause suicidal ideation or attempts, it is critical to examine the unique variables that may contribute to a higher risk of suicide within special populations that social workers encounter including, but not limited to the LGBTQIA community, people of color, and special needs to name a few. In accordance to the NASW Code of Ethics, it is critical that social workers remain knowledgeable and proficient in analyzing suicidal risk factors to intervene and help prevent death by suicide, but equally important is addressing suicidality in unique populations through a culturally competent lens. Conversely, social workers must also learn to address the protective factors that may enhance resiliency and reduce suicidal risk.

This two-hour interactive workshop will explore some of the unique factors to consider related to suicidality and unique populations, particularly within the adoption community, as well as equip attendees with rudimentary knowledge of the following by utilizing video, lecture, and audience participation:

  •  Unique factors relevant to culturally-competent suicide risk management

  • Common myths related to suicidality and mental health

  • Basic intervention strategies related to suicide prevention and education including Zero Suicide Initiative

  • Recognizing the differences between non-lethal self-harm and suicide thoughts or attempt

  • Prevention resources to better educate the broader community

Consensual Touch & Trauma Informed Medical Exams - Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

Consensual Touch & Trauma Informed Medical Exams

by Molly McHenry, Family Nurse Practitioner, Adoptive Parent

Encompass Adoptees Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

Presentation Description:

This presentation will explore how to navigate consensual touch within the medical setting while providing care for all ages. With high rates of adverse childhood events (ACEs) in the general public, it is prudent to approach all patient care with a trauma-informed lens. For example, asking for consent before touching allows the onus of control to reside with the patient while simultaneously building trust and rapport. Modeling consensual touch can empower and embolden people to expect touch to be consensual in all aspects of their lives and encourage a sense of self advocacy.

Presenter Bio:

Molly McHenry is a family nurse practitioner who has cared for kids, adolescents, and young adults on the margins for over 15 years. Her medical practice is rooted in a harm-reduction, empowerment, and justice. She has served disenfranchised young people in Portland OR, NYC, Boston MA, and now Cincinnati Ohio, where she was born and raised. She has expertise in caring for LGBTQ populations, youth who are incarcerated, youth in foster care, homeless youth, youth struggling with mental illness and addiction, youth forced into survival sex and sex-trafficking, youth who are HIV+ or at risk of exposure to HIV, and youth living in poverty. She currently works in the community health department at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital splitting her time between a school-based community health center, the lead poisoning clinic, and the foster care medical clinic. She is in the process of completing her psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner degree in hopes of better serving the needs of the youth in her care. She is a foster parent, a priest's wife, queer-identified, and hell-bent on making things better for all children.

New Insights into Adoptee Attachment (And Why Traditional Attachment Models are Inadequate) - Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

New Insights into Adoptee Attachment (and why traditional attachment models are inadequate)

by Pamela Cordano, MFT, Adult Adoptee Therapist

Encompass Adoptees Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

Presentation Description:

As a therapist for 30 years (and an adoptee for 58), I’ve worked hard to understand the impact of relinquishment and adoption on one’s ability to find an authentic and stable sense of belonging in this world. Leading models of attachment theory do not adequately fit the adoptee experience. In this talk I will share powerful and difficult-to-language aspects of the adoptee’s challenge to form attachments, with the hope that a deeper understanding will help all parties in the adoption triad.

This presentation is designed for participants at an Intermediate skill/familiarity level with this topic.

Presenter Bio:

Pamela Cordano, MFT is a psychotherapist and adoptee from California who is passionate about healing in community. Most of her work over 30 years has been focused on clients who experience serious illness or tragedy, where life was one way and suddenly changed on a dime. She later realized the trauma of this population mirrored her early life experience and that of many adoptees. Inspired by Viktor Frankl, Pam helps clients identify and cultivate what is uniquely meaningful to them, which allows for increased vitality and new possibilities. What excites her the most is helping people move from despair to finding a deeper Yes to their own lives. Because Pam is particularly interested in the power of healthy community to amplify the healing process, she facilitates healing courses and retreats for adult adoptees.

Relinquishment & Relationships - Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

Relinquishment & Relationships

by Carissa Woodwyk MFT, Adult Adoptee Therapist

Encompass Adoptees Adoption Issues Online Speaker Series

Presentation Description:

Those who have been adopted have experienced the loss of significant attachment figures AND the gain of new attachment figures. We want to love and receive love and feel loved, but it’s super tricky when those who are “supposed to” love you, leave you. We can easily find ourselves playing games, playing roles, protecting ourselves - from ourselves, from others. Relationships can feel risky when your story started with distorted messages. We want to feel close and connected, but our brains and bodies and hearts don’t always know how, don’t always believe that we’re lovable and capable and worthy of love. In this webinar, you’ll learn about the relational barriers adopted persons hold, and what we each can do to soften and strengthen and open what’s inside us and between us as we practice building meaningful relationships together.

This presentation is designed for participants of ALL skill/familiarity levels (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced).

Presenter Bio:

Carissa Woodwyk (she/her) is a Korean-born, mid-west living, pastor’s kid, onion farmer’s wife and recovering good girl. She steps into (or leaps into) a few roles that help her expand the west Michigan culture that surrounds her:

  • licensed counselor/marriage and family therapist

  • clinical supervisor for counselors/marriage and family therapists

  • co-chair of her local school district’s diversity + advocacy committee

  • committee member of her school district’s sex education advisory board

  • writer and speaker for the human heart

  • mom of a tech-filled, 21st century 10th grade daughter and 7th grade son

  • partner to her enneagram opposite and safe place

  • gatherer of people, laughter and joy

  • student to the ways life makes her both stronger and more tender

  • 122 South Terrace Avenue, Unit 1 Columbus, OH, 43204 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

About:

This is a casual discussion group meant to support adoptive, fostering, & kinship parents and to build relationships between parents and their adopted/fostered children of all ages through community, conversation, and educational materials.

Each month we discuss part of a book or topic. We do this in an attempt to cover a larger variety of related issues, to increase our knowledge and awareness of the information that is out there, and to maximize our resources for the future. Although not required, sharing personal experiences and asking questions are encouraged. There is No requirement to read the chapters or to come to all discussions.

-NOTE- Encompass Adoptees encourages critical thinking that takes into account all triad members in regard to all books and resources. Book discussions or reading lists in no way imply agreement with all portions of a book, nor does it indicate any endorsement of the author/s, their programs, techniques, etc. Individual opinions and personal experiences with these items can be shared and discussed during the group meetings, and questions are encouraged.

Details at a Glance:

  • NEW** Meets every 1st Thursday of the month (except Dec for the holidays)

  • Online/ Zoom group -Please email us or pre-register in order to get the zoom link. After you have come once, and the group is able to verify new members are adoptive parents (to ensure a safe space for all attending), you can request to be added to the email list that receives the new link and password each month.

Both of the Encompass Adoptee parent groups are co-facilitated by Heather Gonzales, an adult adoptee, and the Founder and Director at Encompass. She is currently doing her internship to become a licensed therapist at Chrysalis Family Solutions and specializes in working with adoptees and their families. An adoptive parent helps co-facilitate each group- Amber Riley co-facilitates the in-person group. She is the parent of 5 kids, 3 of which are adopted. And Olivia Hamilton will be co-facilitating the online group. She is a foster and adoptive parent and pastor of The Brood, a ministry for foster, adoptive, and kinship families. (Please Note - This space is designed to be inclusive of all people regardless of your faith/spiritual tradition or lack thereof. All are welcome!)

All facilitators are committed to increasing their learning and understanding through the insight and perspective of other triad members, This group offers a safe place to share and ask questions openly and honestly about relinquishment and adoption-related issues. Both groups will be discussing the same topics and you are free to join either or switch back and forth as needed.

This Program is Hosted, Developed, and Facilitated by Encompass Adoptees and is currently Funded and Sponsored by Ohio KAN
