Deescalation Training - October 17th, 7-8:30 pm
- Presentation followed by Q & A by Barb King (therapist in the elementary school system)
This is a required training that we are specifically offering for this group. For those who have already volunteered, we know that several youth participating in the program have histories which can cause behaviors that require a specific type of reaction, and often this needs to be one on one. Which means we all need to know more about how to handle these situations with grace, and in trauma informed ways. This Training will be part of our annual trainings, and will likely have a Part II with more in depth information.
This is free for all Jr Interns, Mentors, and Volunteers who have taken our orientation or are signed up for our next orientation in November ( info below).
Barb King, MA, LPCC-S
Barb's undergraduate work was in the fields of Psychology and Social Work. Early work experiences that contribute to her mental health approaches include being a houseparent at a residential treatment center, becoming a (birth) mother to four awesome AND active children in five years, becoming a treatment foster parent, and navigating the crazy complexities of disability and social services needed for one of them. Since completing a graduate degree in Clinical Counseling in her forties, she has had an eclectic variety of opportunities, working with youth, adults and families in outpatient, crisis/ED assessment, domestic violence shelter/support, and works currently in a school-based mental health settings. Somewhere along the way, a private practice was established and passed down, Barb still finds herself seeing a few folks in that setting as well. Lifelong interests in foster care, adoption, disability and trauma-based needs have spurred her to post-graduate work in play therapy, including TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Theraplay.
